I have decided to write about some of the basics that I have learned through the years while studying up on depression. This is part one of a series.
It is unknown exactly what causes depression. In fact, most doctors believe that many factors contribute to depression.
Biochemical Causes of Depression
Many doctors believe depression is a result of low levels of certain types of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that carry signals from one nerve cell in the brain to the next. If there are not enough of these neurotransmitters, or if these neurotransmitters aren't being absorbed properly by the nerve cell, the processing of thoughts and emotions may be affected. Serotonin, the chemical in the body associated with pleasure or happiness, is usually looked at as the chemical which is out of balance in most cases of depression. Medications can be prescribed to bring this chemical back into proper balance.
Hormonal Causes Of Depression
Hormonal changes that affect mood such as menstruation or menopause may also be a cause of depression. People whose thyroid may not be producing enough or produces too much hormone may also be to blame. Stress, which increases the level of cortisone in your body, can also caused depression. Men whose bodies do not produce enough testerone may also be at risk for depression. Therefore, it is important to ask your doctor to check your hormones if you believe you may be depressed.
Genetic Causes Of Depression
It has been found and that depression runs in families. If you have a close relative who suffers from depression, you are much more likely to also suffer from depression. Some doctors argue that this may be an environmental cause of depression instead of a genetic one. Because parents transmit their general patterns of perception to their children, it is thought that these children learn early on the have negative feelings about themselves and the world around them. Other doctors are convinced that depression may indeed be something passed on through genetics.
Side Effects Of Medication Can Cause Depression
Some medications have side effects which can affect mood. Also, chronic illness, such as cancer or any type of illness which seriously effects your movement can cause depression in some individuals. Common drugs such as blood pressure medications, birth control pills, and steroids are sometimes to blame for depression. If you feel depressed after starting a new medication, tell your doctor, and there may be an alternative you can use. what do you think is more effective for depression treatment ,(medicines or cognitive behavior therapy)

Honestly, I think it differs for each person and depends on how severe the depression is.
For me, a combination of the two helped me tremendously. Also, I found that one of the medications I was taking — birth control pills — was the cause of about half of my depressed feelings. The other half I “fixed” with behavior modification and meds.
Because there are so many things that might cause depression, it really is something to talk to a physician about. You really want to go to a doctor and see if there are any hormonal imbalances in your body or other meds that might be wrecking havoc with your mood first. Then, if you are still depressed, talk to your doctor about behavior modification and some sort of medication. Hope this helps.
